Ingredients:
- 1 pound ground beef
- Olive or canola oil, as needed
- ½ cup water
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 clove garlic, minced (or ½ teaspoon garlic powder)
- 1 red or green bell pepper, chopped
- ½ large yellow onion, chopped (or 1 small onion)
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 12 slices American cheese
- 6 slices Texas Toast
Instructions:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a splash of oil.
- Add the ground beef, bell pepper, onion, and minced garlic (if using fresh). Cook while stirring often, breaking up any large meat chunks with a wooden spoon, until the beef is browned.
- Drain off any excess grease from the skillet.
- Reduce the heat and add water, ketchup, mustard, garlic (if using powder), Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar. Stir well and cook for about 8 minutes or until the sauce thickens.
- Meanwhile, preheat the broiler.
- Place the Texas toast slices under the broiler and toast until golden.
- Remove the toast from the broiler and place a slice of cheese on each piece. Return to the broiler for about 30 seconds or until the cheese melts.
- Spoon the beef mixture over each slice of toast with cheese. Add an additional slice of cheese on top.
- Broil again until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Serve the Sloppy Joes hot.
Enjoy your delicious Sloppy Joes!
